California’s New SB 294: Rights, Responsibilities, and a Little Peace of Mind

If you love fresh starts, you’ll appreciate California’s SB 294, also known as the Workplace Know Your Rights Act. Beginning February 1, 2026, employers across the state get a new annual tradition… and no, it’s not free donuts in the breakroom (we wish). Instead, it’s all about keeping employees informed and supported in the workplace.

So what’s new? First, employers must distribute a standalone Know Your Rights notice every year and to every new hire, covering workplace protections ranging from immigration-related rights to constitutional protections during law-enforcement interactions. Thankfully, the Labor Commissioner has made this easy by publishing a ready-to-use template in English and Spanish – with more languages on the way.

Next, SB 294 introduces an important employee-support measure: every worker must be given the opportunity to provide or update emergency contact information annually. And here’s the crucial part – employees can also indicate whether they want that contact notified if they are arrested or detained at work. If the employer becomes aware of such an event, they must follow through and notify the chosen contact.

This update recognizes that moments of crisis shouldn’t leave anyone isolated. It also gives employers a clear, compassionate process to follow.

So, as your organization gears up for the year, make room in your calendar for one new annual task: sharing the Know Your Rights notice and checking in on emergency contacts.
