Brewing Up Trouble: The Spooky Risks of ‘Sinister’ Business Outings

By October 23, 2025HR Blog

As Halloween approaches, we’re reminded that some business outings can be more trick than treat. While team-building activities are great for morale, choosing a venue that’s a little too “spirited” can conjure up some serious HR headaches.

Imagine taking your team to a restaurant with a name that’s more “curse” than “blessing.” Places like “Hooters” or “The Naked Taco” might seem like a “treat” at first, but they can quickly turn into a “trick” when it comes to maintaining a professional atmosphere.

And, let’s be honest, some of these establishments have themes that are more “sinister” than “sincere.” The risk? A witch hunt of a sexual harassment claim. Just because you’re not on company premises or clocked in, the work relationship is still very much alive. And if employees feel pressured to participate in such outings, they might later scream “foul” and claim it created a hostile work environment, especially if they felt their career would be haunted by not joining in.

So, before you plan that “ghoul-time” outing, consider the potential consequences. Stick to venues that are a little more… tame. Your employees (and HR department) will be howling with relief.
