The Art of Appropriate Holiday Gifts at Work

By December 17, 2025HR Blog

The holidays are the perfect time to spread cheer, but when it comes to workplace gifts, not everything belongs under the office tree. While a thoughtful gesture can boost morale, the wrong gift can quickly turn festive spirit into an awkward HR moment.

A good rule of thumb? If you wouldn’t feel comfortable opening it in front of your entire team (or HR), it’s probably not appropriate. Gifts should be professional, inclusive, and neutral, avoiding anything overly personal, expensive, or suggestive.

Winter Solstice – Around December 21, celebrated in many cultures as the shortest day of the year.

Think safe and thoughtful: coffee mugs, notebooks, snacks, gift cards, or team experiences. These show appreciation without crossing boundaries. Remember, the goal isn’t to impress, it’s to make people feel valued and respected.

When in doubt, keep it simple. The best workplace gifts say “thank you” not “please call HR”.
