New Year, New Laws

1.8.25

By Molly Wood, SPHR, MAOL Senior HR Consultant

Sorry if we seem like a broken record, but since a member told me yesterday that they just heard about the increase in minimum wage, we feel it is our duty to write a little reminder about what’s new for 2025.

Don’t Let Your Posters be Auld Lang Syne*

First things first: it’s time to give your labor posters a refresh. There is some new language for the Workers’ Comp section, and you will want to be sure you have accurate minimum wage and Paid Sick Leave announcements posted. Think of it as a New Year’s resolution for your business: stay compliant, avoid fines, and keep your employees informed. You can order posters through SDEA – our vendor says they will be distributed at the end of January.

Handbook Renovation

As you are boxing up your holiday décor for storage, it’s also time to update those handbooks. We know, we know, it’s a daunting task, but someone’s gotta do it. Lucky for you, it can be SDEA. If we have reviewed or created your handbook in the past two to four years, we can revise your handbook including all the legislation from 2021 onward for $500**. If we have reviewed or created your handbook in the last year, a 2025 update is $250**. Much less than a kitchen remodel, and you don’t need to have a port-o-potty in your yard!

Minimum Wage, Maximum Liability

In California, the new minimum wage is $16.50, and if you’re in the city of San Diego, you’ll need to bump that up to $17.25. Wage and hour lawsuits are the plump, juicy, low hanging fruit for attorneys, so make sure those cherries go into a fruit cake and not on your bottom line.

Until Next Time, Attend our 2025 Employment Law Update

In all seriousness, staying on top of labor laws and regulations is crucial for any company. So, take a few minutes to update those posters and handbooks, and make sure you are in the know regarding all the new employment legislation. SDEA is hosting our 45th Annual Employment Law Update on January 29, 2025 from 8:30 – 12:30 at the Doubletree Hotel Mission Valley. Register here and fulfill your New Year’s Resolution to be in the know on employment laws that can affect your business.
