Happy New Year: Time to Get Your HR House in Order

By Molly Wood, SPHR, MAOL Senior HR Consultant

As we bid adieu to the old year and hello to the new one, it’s time to tackle the not-so-glamorous task of updating our Human Resources documents. We know, we know – it’s not exactly the most thrilling way to kick off 2025, but trust us, it’s a necessary evil.

The Handbook: A Blast from the Past

When was the last time you cracked open your employee handbook? Was it 2023? 2022? The Clinton administration? If it’s been a while, it’s time to dust off that old thing and give it a serious update. With new legislation coming into effect in 2025 (and maybe a few from 2024 and 2023 that you might have missed), you’ll want to make sure your handbook is compliant and up-to-date.

Updated Posters

Now that you have dusted off your handbook, it’s time to get your revised employment law posters. You know, the ones that are required by law to be displayed in a conspicuous location where all employees can see them? They don’t really come across as art… Yeah, those ones.

New Hire Forms: Don’t Forget the Taxman

New hire forms are like the welcome mat for your new employees. But before you can roll out the red carpet, you’ll need to update those federal and state tax withholding documents. It’s not the most glamorous task, but trust us, the IRS will thank you (or at least, not audit you)

January: The Perfect Time for a Refresh

January is the perfect time to roll out new policies and procedures. Why? Well, everyone’s feeling optimistic and motivated (or at least, that’s the idea). Take advantage of this momentum to introduce new initiatives, update old ones, and make sure your team is on the same page.

In Conclusion…

Updating your HR documents might not be the most exciting task, but it’s a necessary one. So, grab a cup of coffee, put on your favorite playlist, and get to work on those updates. In May when you are not noticing that all your new hire W-4’s are from 2019, your future self will thank you.
