Many small business owners assume cybercriminals only target large corporations. Unfortunately, the opposite is often true. Smaller organizations frequently have fewer resources dedicated to cybersecurity, making them attractive targets for ransomware, phishing, and business email compromise attacks.
The financial consequences can be devastating. In 2019, Arkansas-based telemarketing firm The Heritage Company suffered a ransomware attack that crippled its systems. Despite paying the ransom, the company reportedly lost hundreds of thousands of dollars and was ultimately forced to suspend operations, leaving approximately 300 employees without work.
A more recent example is Lincoln College, a small Illinois institution that survived for 157 years through world wars, economic crises, and pandemics. Following a ransomware attack in 2021, the college lost access to critical systems used for recruitment, fundraising, and enrollment. The organization paid a ransom of less than $100,000, but the disruption contributed to financial challenges that ultimately forced the college to close its doors.
Cyberattacks do not just create IT headaches. They can halt operations, disrupt payroll, damage customer trust, expose sensitive data, and threaten an organization’s very survival.
The good news? Many cyber incidents are preventable with the right combination of employee training, security controls, and response planning.
