Survey: San Diego CEOs average salary more than $250,000

– Findings part of comprehensive analysis of wages for more than 200 area jobs covering a wide range of industries –

San Diego – June 5, 2012 – The 64th annual, 235-page survey just released by the not-for-profit group San Diego Employers Association (SDEA) found that the average CEO salary in San Diego is more than $250,000.

The findings were part of a periodic and comprehensive analysis of wages for more than 200 area jobs that cover a wide range of industries in the region.

“This survey represents data collected from 119 companies of all sizes and markets throughout San Diego,” said Chris Bryant, President of the SDEA. “In addition to the normal analysis of the total data set, we have broken down the information by company size, industry, revenue and profit status, when there was enough data to summarize without identifying individual companies. Conducting this survey takes a great deal of work, but we feel that it’s in our members’ interest as well as beneficial to the overall region’s employers to know how their compensation packages compare to others similar organizations. This study is also just one example of how we have been supporting companies of all sizes and industries since 1914 with attracting, coaching and training a more efficient work force.”

The official weighted CEO salary average in the survey was $256,575.91. The actual recorded low was under $17,000 with the high reaching $1.2 million. Other notable findings included:

  • 77 companies (65 percent of participants) reported having some sort of incentive program.
  • For the first time in several years, company-wide incentives were reported as the most widely-used incentive with discretionary bonuses remaining a popular option as well.
  • Only 16 companies (13 percent of participants) offer Cost of Living Adjustments (COLAs). This number continues to decrease in popularity, down from last year with 18 percent of companies reporting COLAs.

Participant companies ranged in size with the average size company employing more than 243 individuals. The survey is available for purchase at $400 for SDEA members and $525 for non-members.
